I'm a self-professed "American Idol" watcher. Most music nerds don't find it to be a producer of great music, but I totally beg to differ. Voting politics have gotten in the way of the most talented person winning the contest, but America has gotten it right before. I have many favorite female contestants, 2 of which (Tamyra Gray & LaToya London) should be much bigger than what they are, but that's another conversation. Here's a short list of songs I LOVE from Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia (who has new album out!), Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson & Katharine McPhee. Enjoy. Katharine McPhee-Love Story |
Jennifer Hudson-All Dressed in Love (Sex & The City SDTK). | Katharine-Not Your Girl. Kat's debut album is pretty lovely; check it out. |
Fantasia-Surround You. Swizz Beatz & Rich Harrison created a great summer song for Fanny. This automatically puts me in a good mood. Kelly Clarkson-Walk Away.Probably my favorite song on her "Breakaway" album. Plus, the video is hilarious. Fantasia-Man of the House. THIS IS MY ISH! It's bumpin' and so boss. Katharine-Everywhere I Go. Thanks for this, Babyface. Kelly-What's Up Lonely. The day Kelly finally puts out that R&B based album will be a good one. Carrie-Last Name. Most of Carrie's rockin' anthems are a little too safe & sweet; this hits the sass mark. Fantasia-You Were Always On My Mind. Beautiful cover of a Willie Nelson classic. Her emotive voice was perfect for it. Katharine-Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Her Simon Cowell handpicked rendition is one of the biggest selling "Idol" recordings. Kelly-Cry Kelly-Addicted | Carrie-One Way Ticket. Another easy, breezy, fun song. Carrie-Good Girl. "You betta' get to gettin' on your goodbye shoes..." Jennifer-No One's Gonna Love You. My favorite line is "Don't you dare send me straight to voice-mail I'm just gonna text you." LOL! It's true. Fantasia-Collard Greens & Cornbread Jennifer-Don't Look Down. Musically, she's giving me Whitney on this track. Kelly-Never Again. I love the lyrical poison: "I would never wish bad things, but I don't wish you well..." Kelly- I Know You Won't. It's too cool that Kelly covered another "Idol" winner's song. She SLAYED it too and breathed different life into it. Brings me to tears. Fantasia-Summertime. Fanny's stellar performance of this jazz standard arguably won her the competition. Kelly-Maybe. My favorite lyric is "I don't need to be fixed & I certainly don't need to be found; I'm not lost." Kelly-Hole. The "My December" album was notoriously disliked by record label CEO Clive Davis for being "too dark," & he was accused of sabotaging it's success, but I think it's her best. On a personal note, it saved me while I was battling depression. |
