Likes: More Than a Memory, Beautiful, Your Heart is a Muscle
Overall: Standard 2012 pop album; nothing special
Justin Bieber protégé Carly Rae Jepsen has finally followed up her “Call Me Maybe” Top 40 summer radio reign with her debut album, “Kiss,” and as expected, it’s as trendy as possible. With playfully innocent, simple lyrics on top of synthesized techno-pop, “Kiss” is indicative of the current dance-obsessed mainstream. The album is so predictable, it’s almost mind-numbing. What is surprising (and slightly disappointing), is that very few of the songs are as contagious as “Call Me Maybe.” I know Jepsen was likely pushed to churn out such material, but I was expecting at least one poignant ballad or catchy, adult-contemprary- friendly track like Sara Bareillis’ “Love Song” from a 26-year-old songwriter. The content was much more vapid and youthful than I anticipated. I kind of hoped the record would be “Selena Gomez meets Vanessa Carlton.” Oh, well.
