Overall: You can afford to skip this album. If you’re in the mood for the sound of the 60’s/70’s, pick it up.
This cover album serves as great nostalgia for those who love 60’s and 70’s soul message music. I have an appreciation for the sound; however, the album was too inconsistent in energy for me. My interest wavered from song to song. I felt that some of the songs were lazy covers and no initiative was taken to make them unique and or memorable. Others, I jammed to and thoroughly enjoyed. Cover albums can be tricky to produce. You want to make your own distinctive mark with the song, but you don’t want to spoil what makes the original great, so you struggle to either keep the song intact at the risk of sounding like a weak imitator, or change it just enough to be you and be accused of ruining the song. It’s a catch 22. In the end I felt it was a decent effort, but not a “must hear” record.
