Overall: Agitating and dull, hard to listen to
Keeping with an up-tempo, beat-driven, hip-hop influenced feel, it sounds like Nelly Furtado waited 6 years between releases just to give us 2006’s “Loose” all over again. The lyrics are significantly less sexual and flirtatious, but the over-complicated and strident production (mostly done by Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins) sounds all too familiar and dated (not to mention less catchy), which may disappoint anyone who eagerly awaited to hear from Furtado again. The theme reportedly about her younger days and pre-fame life, some of the lyrics are sweet-natured but very plain and uninteresting. Vocally, Furtado isn’t tolerable anymore; her high-pitched, piercing delivery is finally wearing. The ear-splitting vocal, dull lyrics and lack of melody made “The Spirit Indestructible” very hard to get through. An album sampler is below.
