I usually organize my storyline comments by groups or duos, but the un-medicated edition of Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Bernard) caused so much entertaining damage this month, he gets a section all to himself. The death of his on-again, off-again love, Connie Falconeri, was the icing on the loss cake for Sonny. After interrupting his suicide attempt at the Haunted Star, Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) tried to get him to take the lithium prescribed for his bi-polar disorder, but Sonny emphasized he wanted to feel the guilt (he was at odds with Connie before she died) and pain and refused to take it. Let’s talk about the suicide scene. Any opportunities for a Maurice Bernard monologue or soliloquy should be taken, okay? The writers bypassed what could have been one of the most popular moments in Sonny’s history when they had his sons, Morgan, Dante` and Michael (Bryan Craig, Dominic Zampronga & Chad Duell) show up to help Olivia talk him down.
Sonny has 20 years of demons, guilt, loss and anguish that we really haven’t seen him unload in this decade. Incident after incident, he’s emotionally packed it away, never making the changes required to improve his life for himself or for the ones he supposedly loves. His obsession with power and control and his connections to organized crime lead to the death of his 1st wife, Lily, and the unborn child she was carrying, Connie’s rape and subsequent multiple personality disorder, his son’s (Michael) coma-inducing gunshot wound to the head and his daughter Kristina’s near death from a car bomb, just name a few. He took in an impressionable young man suffering from a brain injury (Jason (Quartermaine) Morgan) and pulled him into the mob, which lead to bloodshed and suffering in his own family and ultimately cost him his life, leaving behind a widow (Samantha) and a fatherless infant. Sonny has a lot of blood on his hands and just as he seemed to be ready to smear himself in every drop instead of washing it away, the Corinthos 3 halt the show. After that missed boat, I thought I’d catch the next ferry when a formerly disheveled Sonny was dragged to Connie’s funeral and he charged at her portrait, but no; only the processional was televised (which I thought was very strange). Maybe we’ll get our beautiful, Emmy-friendly monologue when Michael, his most worshipped and beloved child (we’ll get to that prick), dies.
Only Carly (Laura Wright) could do what Olivia couldn’t, finally getting Sonny to pop a pill (9/24). Why aren’t Sonny & Carly back together, again (more on pairings shortly)? I have to say, I’m kind of going to miss Sonny being off of his rocker. He was heartbreaking and hilarious with tears, random sly grins, inappropriate flirting and sudden jubilance. Did I mention what a brilliant actor Bernard is? I agree with the person who tweeted: “Maurice Bernard says more with just one look than other actors do with 500 pages worth of dialogue.”

Kristen Alderson as Kiki Jerome (Twitter) Morgan, Kiki & Michael
Ay, yi, yi, where to begin with this trio. Trying to clear his off-lithium conscience, Sonny let it out that Morgan knew about Kiki’s paternity (Dr. Silas Clay is her father, not Franco) and he rushed her to marry at the courthouse before she could learn of it herself. Just in case you haven’t been watching, Kiki (Kristen Alderson) was thought to be a Quartermaine heir, therefore related to her crush, Michael, Morgan’s brother. Morgan assumed kinship was the only reason Kiki hadn’t dumped him for his brother, so he covered up the truth about her DNA. What was supposed to be a celebratory wedding toast to Morgan and Kiki by Sonny, ended up being a confession. Michael got the 1st verbal lick, calling Morgan a “lying son of a bitch” (the writers didn’t think that one through; they have the same mother). I gave a loud sigh and took a huge breath, because given how the Michael vs. Morgan storyline and other unrelated bombshells had been written, I expected the writers would have Morgan pounced on by everyone in the room without defending himself and walking away with no justice or vindication, pitifully apologetic. To my very pleasant surprise, Morgan took everyone to task! He may seem like he’s not that bright or wise, but Morgan proved his clan wrong as he made it clear he saw through everyone’s actions from day 1. Sonny and Carly claim to be innocent of favoritism, but among other things, it is quite suspect that they didn’t send the child who had actually gotten hurt away for protection (I don’t know why I’ve never thought about that). It’s also interesting that they keep reminding Morgan he was in the wrong for lying to Kiki, although he was trying to keep his brother’s hands off his girlfriend, but Michael killing Claudia was so justifiable that they covered it up (not to mention they still think Michael should have Kiki). Michael thought Morgan didn’t peep what his intentions were when he tried to interrupt the courthouse wedding, but Morgan did. He also caught all of the googly-eyed glances between Michael and Kiki. He even saw through how quickly Kiki gave up on their marriage and called her out on waiting for even the smallest excuse to leave him so she could be with Michael. I was so happy the writers defied my expectations and gave Morgan gumption. I was even more thrilled and stunned when they gave Morgan 2-extra points and had Kiki walk-in on him sexing her mother, Ava (Maura West)! A reception and gorgeous gown (Kiki’s reception dress was perfect) for nuptials soon to be terminated? $20,000. The look on Kiki’s face when she saw a nonchalant Morgan in bed with her mother? Priceless.
As contenting as the reception scenes were, there were a few important touches missing. Morgan didn’t stress to Kiki that she was the one person he felt was on his side and how much he loved and needed her, to give a deeper context for his misguided actions. There was so much dialogue concentration on how he felt 2nd to Michael, when his familial frustrations are supporting causes for his deception. Also, it irked me that after everything that happened, Kiki and Michael were still swimming self-righteousness, denial and hypocrisy and so instantly reveled in being together. I know fans of the pair were eager to see them suck face and finally start their union, but it didn’t make realistic sense to me for both of them to feel so at peace, blameless and in love right at that second (Michael a little more than Kiki). Michael hit on Kiki before Sonny exposed Morgan and the 2 eye-molested each other during the 1st dance. You’re hitting on your brother’s wife at their reception, dang! Then, once Sonny’s cat was let out of the bag, Michael made the “lying son of a bitch” comment and called Morgan “the stranger that used to be my brother.” Huh? You deceived and lied to your brother too, Michael. You’re now unfamiliar to your brother too now, Michael. When Kiki argued to Michael that it would repetitively open a wound for Morgan to see them together, Michael claimed “we did nothing to cause that situation.” Did your head injury cause sporadic amnesia? How do you figure you played no part in this mess? Had you not been canoodling with your brother’s girlfriend, Morgan would have no reason to lie to you or Kiki about anything. Watching Michael easily persuade Kiki into entering a relationship was just nauseating. Your family just imploded before your eyes and all you’re thinking about is hooking up with this girl? Good gracious! We see you have your priorities straight.
As for Kiki? Most of her reasoning as to why she and Michael shouldn’t link up still had little to do with how she betrayed Morgan. “You hate fighting with Morgan,” she says to Michael. Despite her acknowledging that Michael would be “risking every relationship” he has, she agrees to couple and passionately kisses him mili-seconds later. As I tweeted, if Kiki had any decency about her at all, she would walk away from both brothers. She witnessed a family disintegrate over a situation she’s in the center of and what does she do? Propel the drama by deciding to ride off into the sunset with Michael, but the writers want me to buy that she still has some morality about her by throwing in a refusal to move in with Mikey. Lines that are supposed to illustrate that Kiki and Michael are still good people and feel guilt are null and void because their actions don’t match. For example, Kiki admits to lying to Morgan, and every day at that, but she doesn’t see herself as equally culpable in the downfall of their marriage; if she did, she wouldn’t have asked for a divorce or annulment. It would’ve been less predictable and shocking if she took time to think or picked neither brother; no one would see that coming (or if she was more Jerome-like and was trying to con both brothers financially). Imagine the look on Michael’s face then. Rather, Kiki smiled amorously as Michael declared “tonight’s just for us;” a night designed for her and Morgan. Adding on to the arrogance are continuous lines were Kiki and Michael downplay Morgan’s anger, such as Michael saying “Morgan and I will always be brothers, no matter how pissed off he is at the moment,” as if Morgan’s having a temporary tantrum over something miniscule.

Blurred lines: Morgan & Ava heat up the sheets (ABC) When the new lovebirds came across the sheet-rustling Morgan and Ava, Kiki repeatedly describes it as “disgusting” and says things like “It’s my mother! And mother, I can’t believe you would go along with this!” More hypocrisy. Disgusting? You mean like how you were smitten with Michael, whom you thought was your cousin until just a short time ago? “It’s your mother?” You mean like Michael is Morgan’s brother? And why would you be shocked Ava would sleep with Morgan? Are you expecting some sort of loyalty, like Morgan did of Michael? She follows with “Morgan, I know you’re upset…” More downplaying supported by Michael’s overly calm “I know Kiki & I hurt you; the whole situation is terrible.” So lightly put, Mikey. You know you hurt Morgan? Are you sure, because then you say “No one betrayed you Morgan!...Hasn’t our family been torn apart enough?” More denial. When Morgan assumes Kiki and Michael consummated their relationship, Michael says “We spent all night talking about you and how terrible we feel…I tried to be a brother to Kiki…she wanted to do the right thing, but it was never going to work.” More “I’m not that immoral” self-righteousness that doesn’t match actions.
Michael then pretends to be a concerned, protective big-brother and warns Morgan against Ava. Morgan doesn’t land a punch at Michael, but Kiki slaps Ava. Kiki gives a lame speech in which she sounds like a pouty teen, ranting about how she thought she had a “cool mom,” whom she now views as a liar and slut. A liar, yes. A slut? Kiki, you’re the one brother swapping, cousin-kissing and sexually active since 15. Your mother has had 2 partners that we know of. Girl, stop. The scene caps with Kiki vowing to be done with both Morgan and Ava once and for all, as if she wasn’t done already.
From “We spent all night talking about you” to when Michael and Kiki leave, the writers try to sell a positive perspective of Kiki and Michael, as I mentioned prior. Michael is still trying to be a good brother, even though Morgan hates him, audience! Kiki has been wounded by her mother, feel sorry for her! Michael and Kiki tried to avoid their romance, but they couldn’t help it! It just happened! They’re not all that bad! A fan commented “One of the main reasons Michael, Kiki & Morgan is awful is that we're supposed to be on Michael's side. No. Just no.” I could be wrong, but I think the main people who back or are interested in “MiKi,” as they’re called, are those who liked Michael and Starr (Alderson’s former character) and just want to see the actors on-screen again together. If Kiki were portrayed by a completely new and different actress, I doubt this pairing would be all the rage. If the writers want to stop being accused of Michael favoritism and/or get viewers who are Team Morgan to at least swallow MiKi, a couple of things have to happen. Michael and Kiki must pay for their deeds; karma has to greatly bite them in the butt. 2nd, the denial and attitude of little blame must stop. Lastly, Morgan mustn’t be turned into AJ Quartermaine. Morgan, the biological Corinthos son, is the black sheep who feels outcasted from his family, while the adoptive son, Michael, is nurtured and praised. Sound familiar? It seems the writers are preparing AJ vs. Jason redux. If that’s where things are headed, I’m not liking it. I wanted to see a dynasty war, but I thought it would be Morgan getting to join daddy in the mob, while Michael goes Team Quartermaine and the 2 sides collide. I didn’t impatiently wait for Morgan Stone Corinthos (his name alone carries GH history) to be aged, so he can be the whining, bratty loser-jerk of the family who can never get his life together. As author and GH lover @GenevieveDewey put it: “I refuse to sit and watch while they give Morgan the Fredo Corleone treatment, or WORSE, the AJ treatment.” Please make Morgan a strong, stand-out character, writers. On another note, how many of you fans want to see Morgan join the Jerome ranks in taking Sonny down?
Carly & Franco, Sam & Silas/Pairings in General

A reminder probably isn’t needed, but Franco is also responsible for Carly’s son, Michael, being raped in prison. Carly’s soft-spot for the serial-killer has been growing since his brain tumor lead him to almost commit suicide months ago and it all culminated into a kiss on 9/26. It’s funny; Carly’s always claimed to be more loyal and loving to Jason than his love interests, Sam and Liz, but Liz (Rebecca Herbst) was the one needing to give Carly a Franco refresher when they were both memorializing Jason on the pier on 9/12. Wright has been actively tweeting her excitement about getting to work with Howarth, but in terms of her character and the storyline, a relationship with Franco does not make sense and should be revolting to the characters involved.

Kelly Monaco as Samantha McCall Morgan (E!) Following a kiss earlier this month, Sam and Silas (Kelly Monaco, Michael Easton) had a “date” of sorts. Ava planted one on Silas at Morgan and Kiki’s wedding reception, just as Sam arrived and Silas was in the position to have to smooth things over. To compensate for their failed dinner date, Silas brought BBQ to the hospital and the 2 had a heart-to-heart about their deceased brothers. A warning from Ava and Sam’s questioning if Silas had anything to hide reinforced the hint there’s something underlying and shady about him. As I wrote in my latest Pier 52 feature, “Diffusing JaSam & Entering Siam,” Sam moving on is tricky, uncomfortable and aggravating to a huge part of her fan-base because her grieving period was not handled properly and this is the 3rd forced attempt at coupling her with a character portrayed by Easton.
Right now, characters are becoming unrecognizable and written to do things they never would (i.e. Carly), plot elements are being downplayed (Sam’s grieving Jason) or pushed (being with Silas) and families are being ripped to shreds (Michael and Morgan) for the sake of recreating and recycling former couplings. To me, it’s trivial to risk character consistency and build or the plot cohesion and tone of the show just to put actor dyad favorites together, especially when the match doesn’t necessarily have the scent of super-coupledom. “One Life to Live” refugees Howarth, Alderson and Easton were all different characters when they first appeared on GH. Due to failed negotiations with OLTL’s new license-holder, Prospect Park, the trio had to be given new roles, and as @Jerron1234 describes, “they just picked up where they left off” with their prior matches as opposed to “bouncing them around and seeing what could be there, potential wise, with other characters and actors. What would it have hurt to move Michael on with Ellie or Carly back with AJ (which they flirted with)?” In regards to Sam, @The_Lurker12 thinks “Sam should be single… She has enough connections on canvas to go without a romance.” I definitely agree with the idea that the relationships should’ve been switched up.

Carlos Rivera! Patrick & Sabrina
He’s fine! He has a sexy accent! He’s dangerous! He’s Carlos Rivera (Jeffery Vincent Parise)! I already love Sabrina’s (Teresa Castillo) scruffy blast from the past. He’s gunning to get “his Sabrina” back from Patrick (Jason Thompson) and he’s not sugar-coating that fact. Lovers of the hospital scene, “Patrina” and/or “Scrubs” (Patrick and Robin) are A-ok Carlos potentially recapturing Sabrina’s attention because we all knew that Robin (Kimberly McCollough) would eventually come back from the “dead.” Additionally, with Patrick having the revelation he really can’t let go of Robin, this gives Patrina an amicable and relatively painless out. Sabrina served her purpose. My only issue is that their eventual end is feeling kind of rushed. All of the sudden, Sabrina is bothered by Patrick still wearing his wedding band and he has a hesitant heart after going full steam ahead. Hmph. I also love that Carlos is secretly in the mob. This should get interesting. Oh, and how cute and amusing are the scenes where Carlos riles up a jealous Patrick? Patrick is so hot when he’s jealous. Hotter than spicy Cheetos.
Right now, characters are becoming unrecognizable and written to do things they never would (i.e. Carly), plot elements are being downplayed (Sam’s grieving Jason) or pushed (being with Silas) and families are being ripped to shreds (Michael and Morgan) for the sake of recreating and recycling former couplings. To me, it’s trivial to risk character consistency and build or the plot cohesion and tone of the show just to put actor dyad favorites together, especially when the match doesn’t necessarily have the scent of super-coupledom. “One Life to Live” refugees Howarth, Alderson and Easton were all different characters when they first appeared on GH.
