Beyonce’s Best

1/7/2010

Ok, I’ve been asked this several times. I think Beyonce’s best solo songs artistically are:
• “Me Myself and I” (Dangerously In Love)
• “Resentment”, (B’day): Beyonce` sings with so much conviction and emotion, you feel every drop of pain.
• “Still in Love (Kissing You)” (B’day Deluxe)- delicate and romantic. I was so geeked when I heard she was going to cover the song because I LOVE the original. My favorite song by my favorite singer.
• “Trust in Me” (Cadillac Records Sdtk): the characterization of Etta is so perfect on this song. Too bad she didn’t nail the characterization on “At Last”; where it counted the most. Beyonce` proves on this song that she can handle gritty, old school soul.
• “Smash Into You” (I Am…Sasha Fierce)
• “Ring the Alarm”: Our first encounter with an angry, irrational, kick butt Beyonce`. I love the insanity of it.
• “Save the Hero” (I Am…Sasha Fierce Bonus)- it’s an extremely well-written, introspective song about being in a “hero” position. Beyonce` is in rare form; the song reveals what could possibly be some honest feelings. Check out my June 3rd post under “entertainment” to hear it.

For the most part, I agree with that list, but I would add:

"World Wide Woman" (B'Day extra) - It's one of her more playful tracks without her being completely childish. LOL

"Kitty Kat" (B'Day) - Same playful vibe, with The Neptunes providing an awesome beat!

"I'd Rather Go Blind" (Cadillac Records Sdtk.) - She showed the same kind of characterization of Etta James on this cover as "Trust In Me". Loved it!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot one! "Save The Hero" is probably one of her (or someone else's....) best written songs to date. It showed a vulnerability that I think most entertainers feel, but don't express often enough...if at all.

@Natasha: I almost put "World Wide Woman" on the list; I LOVE that song, it makes me smile. However, I wanted to mention songs that I felt were, in one way or another, artistically strong. As for “Save the Hero,” I need to add it to the list and I think I will. You’re right, a lot of entertainers haven’t addressed the issues in the song, and it’s particularly interesting to hear about it from Beyonce` because she’s SUCH a private person. Bee is often focused on writing songs for her audience, and typically doesn’t have songs that are blatantly and obviously related to her, so it’s fascinating to see her go there. It makes the song really stand out. For those who haven’t heard it, check out my June 3rd post under “entertainment.”

Where's "Dangerously in Love"?? I think that's single-handedly her best song to date. None of her other work matches the lyrical depth and maturity of that song. Also, we know for a fact that she wrote it and wrote it at just 17, which is impressive. The other choices are great, but I think the most important choice got left off here.
I like Natasha's picks too, except for "Kitty Kat." The beat was the best thing going for it; after that, it's pretty darn useless. And don't know if I would've included "Smash Into You." That song was kind of boring to me.

    Seriously Beyonce`, WTH?!?

Most people figure out pretty quickly that I LOVE Beyonce`. She is my queen diva of choice. But every now and then, she does something that irritates or perplexes me. Here, I tell what's been buggin me about the Bee lately (with reviews and love for the Queen Bee in between).
