Do non-feminists make statements like this? I’ve heard different arguments proposing reasons why Beyonce` cannot be classified as a feminist. The two reasons I hear the most are: 1) She has a sexy image and 2) She sings about love too often. She Has a Sexy Image To say that someone isn’t a feminist because they have sex appeal implies that feminists aren’t or can’t be sexy, reinforcing the stereotype that feminists are bitter, ugly lesbians. I can see why one would factor sexual image into labeling someone as useful (or not) to feminism, however. The sexual personas of some female public figures arguably feed into the objectification of women. In Beyonce’s case, I don’t feel she has a detrimental or counteractive sexual persona. There have been moments where I’ve found her behavior to be questionable, but those moments are very rare. Majority of her music is G-Rated (PG-13 at most), her interviews have yet to be sexually provocative or explicit, she’s never been nude in a film or photo and most of her performance costumes aren’t incredibly revealing. If Beyonce` is guilty of anything, it’s being sexually appealing. Of course men would ogle at her; she’s a beautiful, alluring woman. Is that a crime? No. Sexy nurse or kitten? No. It's SpiderMAN. She Sings About Love Too Often A friend of mine said “I don’t think Beyonce’s a feminist. She’s a hopeless romantic.” After a performance of “Run the World,” my father asked “If girls run this motha’, then why is she married to Jay-z? Why does she need Jay-z?” What does one have to do with the other? Feminists can’t be in love now? My friend and father’s comments stem from yet another stereotype about feminism: feminists are against marriage and procreation. Some people believe that feminism is about being anti-childbirth and eliminating men and the institution of marriage. Some feminists are indeed against those things, but that isn’t a central tenet. Feminism is about freedom, equality, support and opportunity for women. Feminism fights the objectification, exploitation and mistreatment of women. Beyonce` can be an empowered, feministic woman and STILL be a wife and mother who’s happy to be one. One does not eliminate the other, nor is it related. If Beyonce` isn’t a feminist, why does she record so many feministic songs to the point that she’s accused of having too many? Why does she constantly mention female solidarity, empowerment and being an example of female-owned/operated business in her interviews? Why do many of her philanthropic efforts involve providing support for women and girls in crisis? Why has she purposely had an all-female band since 2006? Yeah….she’s not a feminist at all. Any questions? Comments? Loves, hates or fears? Sorry for the credit errors at the end...my Windows Movie Maker was actin' a fool lol. Let me know what you guys think of it :) To see my video for "Schoolin" Life," click this link: http://bit.ly/sPrrSi To vote for your favorite song from "4," use this link: http://bit.ly/sJAHCb Click the photo & see Beyonce's "Countdown" I’m going to give up writing reviews for Beyonce` videos until I see something fantastic. Like most of her other video offerings, Beyonce` fails to use the lyrics of the song (in this case “Countdown”) to tell a great story. Instead, it’s a lot of cute face and posing as usual. Yes, I know Beyonce` is pregnant and is likely not able to do aggressive choreo, but you don’t need great choreography to tell a story- see any major country video (ex. Carrie Underwood-Before He Cheats). USE THE SONG. USE THE LYRICS YOU TOOK THE TIME TO WRITE. I should be able to look at the visual on mute and be able to make an educated guess of what song it goes to. To see the video, click the picture above. A precious baby bee ;) Here’s a guide for all you brand spanking new Beyonce` fans, otherwise known as “baby bees” :) 1. Hardcore Beyonce` fans are known as “bees.” This cute, pop-culture nickname is a derivative from Beyonce’s nickname, “Bey” or “Bee-Bee.” She used a honey bee as a symbol for her 2006 album, B’Day. 2. View this website: (http://knowyourbees.tumblr.com/) and take the quiz “What kind of bee are you?” it’s a great source of understanding of Beyonce` fan terminology and hierarchy. 3. Look into Beyonce’s discography. This is ESSENTIAL. A “bee” cannot attest to Beyonce’s growth or strength as an artist if you’re not familiar with her music. This includes the Destiny’s Child material, which Beyonce` was a key creative force in. If you can’t purchase prior albums or don’t have access to them, look up track-listings on Wikipedia and find some of the songs on YouTube. 4. Purchase “Soul Survivors,” the official, authorized biography of Destiny’s Child. So far, this is the only existing biography written by the ladies of Destiny’s Child. This book will help you learn about Beyonce’s background. Beyonce’s bio on Wikipedia has errors, so it’s best not to use that as a valid source; just browse it for information past 2002, since “Soul Survivors” ends around that period. 5. Get to know Beyonce further by watching older press interviews, performances and specials, like “MTV Diary”. 6. Make friends with other bees. For starters, join my facebook fan community “The Beehive” (click the photo above to visit the page). Also, chat in the forums on beyonceworld.net (the mother-ship of Beyonce` fan sites) and on Bey’s official page, Beyonceonline.com. Making friends isn’t a requirement, it’s just nice to have someone who shares your interest. 7. Need or want Beyonce gear? A great way to find inexpensive paraphernalia is to shop on EBay or Half.com. Between those 2 sites, you can find posters, magazines, buttons, clocks, tour items, clothes, etc. Be sure to read the site’s warnings and suggestions for smart and safe shopping. 8. You DO not have to buy every magazine or item, or see every performance to be a “real” fan. You do NOT have to dislike other artists, attack fans of other artists, or ONLY like Beyonce` to be a real fan. At minimum, know and enjoy the music. Also, it’s perfectly ok to CONSTRUTIVELY criticize Beyonce` every once in a while. Not everything she does is perfect. Hope this helps! Peace, Love & Bee’s Honey! A short behind-the-scenes promotional film of Beyonce's "4 Intimate Nights at the Roseland Ballroom" concert has hit the internet. This film will likely be included as a bonus feature on the rumored upcoming fall DVD release (you can watch it below). Beyonce` was reportedly pregnant during the performance, with the show being only weeks before her MTV VMA official announcement. As short as the film is, it really builds up anticipation and I already have favorite quotes from it: "She's listening to her inner voice right now... I think she took risks...I think she's being more authentic and doing what she wants to do instead of doing what people expect...This is my favorite album. I've loved Beyonce` since Destiny's Child, even though I'm a hard rocker."-Bibi Mcgill, Guitarist "Any entertainer and any performer that had to come through New York had to come through this building (Roseland). Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, we've had Madonna here, the Rolling Stones, and that's what gives the Roseland Ballroom its history and its fame." "What do you after 16 Grammys and millions of records sold?...whatever makes you happy...All I have to do is have fun, have artistic freedom to do whatever I want...It's not about the frills, it's not about production, it's not about choreography and costumes, it's about the music."-Beyonce` Using clips from my favorite movies & Beyonce` moments, here's my fan-made video for "Schoolin' Life"- it's my favorite song on the deluxe edition of "4." Not only is it musically excellent, but it has a great message. We are all students in the class of life. We have the power to make our own grade. I hope you all enjoy it and I love all my fellow bees ;) *I do not own the footage or music used. No copyright infringement intended.* Here is a tribute video I made in commemoration of Beyonce's 30th birthday and to congratulate her on her pregnancy. I hope all of you bees enjoy it. Click the photo below the video to sign Beyonce's baby book that will be sent to the House of Dereon`. :) Here's the direct video link just in case there's an error: http://youtu.be/xMtxjQ72H_0 BEES! This is YOUR chance to share your excitement & love and personally congratulate Beyonce` on her pregnancy!! Comment on this blog post to leave your personal message for the King B. ALL of the messages will be compiled in a decorative notebook and sent to a source where Bey is likely to receive it (I was considering sending it to the Dereon chief offices if I cannot find Beyonce's new management contact information.) If you have any suggestions of where to send the book, hit the "Contact/Info" tab on this site and fill out the form. DO NOT leave your suggestion with your personal note. Please refrain from using explicit language in your personal message. Until further notice, the last day for message collection is January 30th. Time to pollinate, bees! Spread the word about this post! Also, join my Beyonce` Facebook fan community at facebook.com/beyoncesbeehive. :) |
